I'm thinking about buying a PS3 here in the last run, because I want to play the PS exclusives I have missed, as the prices are cheap and because I badly want to try GT6 out. I'm an avid forza "racer" and I love it, mainly because of one thing, the stable 60 fps even if the grid hits 16 cars.

1. Does the game have frame drops? I played GT5 a couple of years ago, and I just couldn't enjoy it because of the small but still frustrating framedrops.

2. How is the online scene?

3. And why is GT better than Forza? Or what does GT do better than Forza.

I can answer to 3.

GT does, and I'll get flack for this, really nothing better than Forza.

They are both semi-sims. Arcade simulations. When you turn off all the assists, the two games largely play exactly the same. There isn't much difference. Honestly.

People who say GT is more a sim is like saying brown bread is more gourmet than white bread. Both serve their purpose but there are far more nutritional options available.

All my bases are covered on the sim-front with IRacing and so forth. But glad you answered, I have heard the same thing, so I doubt its a lie.

If you want a more 'fun' game, thats Forza. Its inherently made to be easier and more enjoyable up front with less grinding and less repetitive license nonsense.

Thats what got me into Forza in the first place. Want to do hard races in GT? Grind through licenses and nonsense. If I wanted to do that...I have a PC and I can get iRacing and actually enjoy my grinding and frustrating.

At least with Forza I simply needed enough credits to buy a LMP1 race car and I could engage in Le Mans hour long races at my leisure. Got tired of D class championship? Buy a A or S class car, compete in those right away and hope that I have enough skill to do so.

The meticulous nonsense of GT turned me off from the series entirely, especially with the advent of the PC counterparts that actually reward your grinding and relentless push for 'realism'

Haven't played GT6, but:

Supposedly the frame problems on GT5 were greatly fixed with patches, and were a lot more common on the newer 'thin' PS3s (which are, frankly, shit compared to the original fat PS3s, especially the massive-hard-drive-backwards-compatible ones), so I imagine GT6 has fixed the issues (if they still remain) too.

The community for GT5 is huge, unless you're coming from Halo or COD. A large amount switched from GT5 to GT6 overnight, so

As for GT vs Forza, it was generally assumed (not so sure about the newest versions) that GT's physics were more realistic, with more cars, a bigger community, better support, and better challenges for hardcore players. However, Forza had a better player experience, more customization (but not as accurate) better graphics, but worse physics and generally more arcade-like driving. This was as of GT5 and F4 though, so I don't know how GT6 makes improvements over GT5's fallbacks, but supposedly the online for GT6 has gotten much better.

I recently bought a PS3 just to play GT6 and so far it feels worth it. I already have a 360 and Fourza and although the whole "standard vs. premium car" thing is annoying, I really prefer it to Forza now.

Not that I've noticed but maybe sometimes now that you mention it. Nothing that bothers me much.

I have only really played online with a friend but there are always tons of rooms.

I'm starting to prefer the physics in GT to Forza, they just feel more realistic and better . It might be that I finally fully turned off the racing line (already driving without assists) but it also feels like I've gotten better than I was while I was playing Fourza. Part of that is also because GT challenges me a lot more with license tests, seasonal events and time attack challenges (which I always play until I get gold).

Good to know about the frames and etc. Just gotten tired of Forza, and i'm not buying a next-gen console before summer, so I just need to kill some time with something new. Thanks for the answer, it a great help!

I think that the grinding aspects of GT5 are way over-exaggerated, given how extremely easy all of the main races are (until you get to the real challenges) and how all of the license tests are primarily just for bragging rights.

If you don't have an internet connection and you don't have a wheel, it can get pretty boring trying to find new content that doesn't kick your ass. But for the most part, almost all GT5 players spent most of their time online or in private lobbies with friends, because it only took a few hours to beat all but the endurance races, and PD constantly released new, more balanced, races every week through online competitions.

My advice is to save the $300 or so and just get a PS4 at the end of summer, then wait for GT6/7 to show up on the PS4. It'll be cheaper in the long run and then you won't have an outdated console sitting around. Supposedly they're doing an upgraded release for the PS4 eventually.

Now, you COULD get the PS3 and then splurge on a bunch of great PS3 games and let the PS4 come down in value first, but while there are a few games on the PS3 that are groundbreaking, they're groundbreaking circa 2006. A lot of the exclusives that sold the console originally sort of pale by comparison to anything new. Compare Metal Gear Solid 4 to The Last Of Us. Both great games, but if you get angry at framerate drops, MGS4's "amazing" 2006 graphics are pretty bad now.

I would say GT6 doesn't run as smoothly as Forza. The online community on GT is quite a huge amount bigger than Forza. The only problem is you have a lot more people who can't drive or people who just crash into you the whole time. As far as realism, GT has it's strengths and weaknesses, and so does Forza. For example, gearboxes on Forza are much better. The shifts on GT feel like you're driving the worlds fastest double clutch no matter what you're in. Forza's shift times change depending on the car. I always thought GT was better for racing (even with the bad AI) and Forza was more of a fun, mess around game. Although that's just what I feel.

Oppo has a very healthy GT6 group. There have been oppo parties for 4 days in a row now. Frame rate wise, I feel it is better than GT5

I have a question to anyone who can answer. Is it worth getting the PS3 with GT6 this late into it's lifespan? What I mean by this is, is the community slowly shifting to the PS4 (I understand GT7 isn't coming out for a while, but I'd hate to waste 250-300 dollars for a community that's going to disappear once GT7 comes out).
